Word came down just before 6 p.m. Friday that Hobey Baker award winner and free agent Jimmy Vesey, after being courted by several NHL clubs including the Maple Leafs, has signed with the New York Rangers.
So what does it mean for the Leafs? Well, they’re still close to the salary cap, and I believe they will still make a move that will offer them some cap relief…but the urgency may now be removed…meaning it could come in-season.
That said, there’s been much speculation that a number of deals and signings have been put on hold until after teams saw where Vesey landed. So we could now see a surge of activity which may or may not include the Leafs. The next couple of weeks will be interesting to watch.
